COURSE OVERVIEW

Starting a new job is a big step — and one that often brings more questions than answers. For many disabled people, the early days at work come with added uncertainty: What can I ask for? What happens if I need support? Will I be treated fairly?

This training answers those questions before they turn into problems. It covers your rights from day one, how to ask for help early on, what’s considered reasonable support, and how to deal with common workplace scenarios that can feel intimidating when you’re just starting out.

Participants leave feeling more confident, better informed, and ready to speak up if something isn’t working.

Workplace Rights When Starting a New Job - Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our Workplace Rights When Starting a New Job training below, and get in touch if you need further assistance!

Who is this training for?

This session is for disabled people who are about to start a new job.

Whether they’ve never worked before or are returning after time out, it’s designed to reduce anxiety and help them feel confident, informed, and ready to succeed in their new workplace.

How is this different from the course ‘Your Rights at Work: A Guide for Disabled People’?

Great question!

Your Rights at Work: A Guide for Disabled People is a broader course that covers legal rights across the full span of employment — from recruitment to progression to dealing with issues or discrimination.

Workplace Rights When Starting a New Job, on the other hand, is a focused session for people about to begin work.

It looks specifically at early-stage situations, what support to ask for from the start, and how to feel more confident in a new role.

Both courses are complementary but designed for different stages.

Can support workers or carers attend too?

Yes. If someone would benefit from having their job coach, key worker or support person attend with them, that’s absolutely fine. We welcome it — especially when it helps reinforce the learning afterwards.

Will participants have to share personal information?

No. Sharing is always optional. People can take part in the way that works best for them. There’s no pressure to speak in front of others or share their history.

What do participants get to take away?

Everyone receives a digital resource pack with a first-day checklist, example phrases for workplace conversations, an adjustment request template, and a simple overview of their rights under the Equality Act.

What kind of rights do you cover?

We focus on rights under the Equality Act 2010 — including access to reasonable adjustments, how to raise concerns, and what support you can ask for from day one.

We also cover general employment rights that apply to all workers, such as the right to a written contract, paid annual leave, and the right to request flexible working.

Will this help people feel less nervous about starting work?

Yes — that’s one of the core aims. We know starting work can feel overwhelming, even when someone is excited and ready.

This session helps reduce uncertainty, build clarity, and equip participants with the confidence to ask for what they need.

Is this suitable for all types of jobs?

Yes.

The content is flexible and can be tailored to suit different employment sectors, working environments, or job roles.

We always try to use examples that feel realistic and relatable for your group.

Can this be delivered online?

Yes. However, we recommend in-person delivery where possible, as it creates a more engaging, connected environment — especially for practical exercises and group discussion.

Who delivers the training?

This course is delivered by experienced trainers who understand disability, inclusion, and employment support — both professionally and personally. We know how new jobs feel, and we’re here to help people succeed.
